The 10,000 Steps a Day Myth Debunked

For years, we have been told that 10,000 steps a day would lead to better fitness, lower weight, and longer lives. But why 10,000? Doesn’t that number seem awfully convenient (and memorable)? Turns out that 10,000 steps a day was just a marketing ploy to sell - wait for it - pedometers. In 1965.

This article goes into more detail, but recent research has shown that somewhere between 4500 and 7500 steps is a more realistic (and achievable) goal to derive the health benefits of walking.

Walking does in fact have a myriad of benefits both physically and mentally. Committing to somewhere around 7500 steps is about 45 minutes of leisurely-paced walking. You will feel better and be healthier for it.
